Eating Disorders

Eating disorders are mental illnesses that effect an individual's behavior and thought about food, weight, and body image. Today we learned about three types of disorders.

1) Anorexia
2)Bulimia
  • Similar to anorexia
  • Binge eating then vomiting
  • overuse of laxitives
  • Don't want to get skinny but don't want to gain weight
  • exercise a lot
  • warning sighs: swelling of jaw, sating of the teeth callouses and scars from self induced vomiting.
  • Symptoms: discolored teeth, irritable  bowel syndrome
  • 1-2 percent of adolescent women 80 % female
  • Apear to have an avg body weight
  • infertility possible
  • severe mental issues for child in womb
  • heart attack is most common death
3) Binge eating
  • overeating of food
  • once a week over and over
  • too much food in short time
  • no desire to purge
  • unhealthy amount of food consumed over a short period of time
  • often obese or overweight
  • higher risk for developing cardiovascular disease and high blood pressure
  • Eats 5,000 - 15,000 calories in one sitting
  • Often snacks, in addition to eating three meals a day
  • feels like they have no control of eating
