CH11 and 12 Discussion



  • Why does Jem have to read to Mrs. Dubose? What is actually happening as he reads? Why does Atticus say Mrs. Dubose has “real courage”?
    • bc he destroyed her garden
    • she is correcting him but slowly falling asleep and not listening
    • bc she faces a challenge that would normally be impossible and knows what she needs to do.
  • There are clear gender roles during this time period. How are girls and boys supposed to act? How to these expectations complicate Scout’s life?
    • they make it hard for her to go through life without people criticizing her  tomboyishness
    • her quick to fight attitude is made to seem even worse because she eshould be a "yound lady" 
  • Why doesn’t Dill visit in the summer?
    • he has a  new daddy and is buidling boats with him
  • Discuss the kids’ trip to church with Calpurnia? What do they notice about Calpurnia during this adventure? How are the kids treated at the African American church? What do they find out about Tom Robinson while they are there?
    • They were treated like outsiders at first especially by lula but eventually were seen as equals especially the line "it's the same god" 
    •  Calpurnia talks like she is uneducated around other people of color as not to make them uncomfortable
    • tom robinson was a regular church-goer and his sentencing is causing struggling for his mother and her other children
    • this is the first time the children have really been around poorrer people and the lack of adornmants and hym books suprise them
    • the linen form of hymnals is confusing at first but is a solution to not beng able to read or afford religiooous texts
  • Other questions or observations?
    • the ewel that accusing  tom of rape is the same family that scout beat up the son of
